Window security film is designed to make glass 2-3 times stronger than alone. Its primary purpose is to keep the glass intact should something or someone hit it. For example, if an object like a ball hits a window, the film will hold the glass together, creating a shatter-proof barrier. It also prolongs the amount of time it would take an intruder to try to break through the glass. Another security feature is that it blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays.
No – bulletproof window film doesn’t exist. However, window security film does reduce the time it would take a shooter to break through the glass.
The glass will break and shatter even when protected with window security film. This protective film ensures that the shattered glass is held together so that shards don’t fall out of the window frame. Like a vehicle’s windshield lamination keeps glass from shattering when a rock hits it, for example, window security film ensures that the overall piece of glass remains intact.
Window security film is made of strong polyester film. It consists of one or more layers that are laminated together using strong and unique adhesives. Generally, the thicker the film is, the less likely it is to break, puncture, or tear. The thicker film would be used for security purposes, while the thinner film would be used for tinting and solar protection applications.
Window security film can last several years depending on the surface and location to which it’s applied. It will last longer when installed on the window’s interior than on the exterior due to exposure to weather.
